Two Saturdays ago we were invited to the Kim's for a themed dinner, specifically a Murder Mystery dinner party. What is that, you might ask. It was our first time attending such a dinner too, and so how it works is: a group of people attend a dinner party. Each is assigned a role and will be given a script to read that night. The aim of the party is to identify a murderer in the midst of us by the end of the night. The hosts would work off a dinner game set (they got it off Amazon) and it comes with proper invites, setting/ scene, table name cards, scripts and even a suggested menu. Clearly RX is an Agatha Christie fan.
Two weeks beforehand, we received our invites in the postbox, telling us what roles we each have been assigned and the suggested attire (and props if necessary). Interesting yes?
The dinner was to start at 7pm and we were to have 8 people that night. It's all very mysterious…
Our invitation cards assigned K the role of Monsieur Bertrand, a famed chocolatier in Belgium and myself Marchioness Duchamp, a provocative French artist known during that time for pushing art boundaries. Monsieur Bertrand was to dress up in an evening suit whereas Marchioness Duchamp was to dress in a long flowing dress, preferably in deep reds or purple, with a silk shawl. Thankfully it was nothing too fancy for us and no rental of attire was needed.
Right, on our way then! |
When we arrived, we were brought into the living room by the hosts and went one round to introduce our characters. We then proceeded to watch a short video (also part of the game set yes) of a French detective welcoming us and explained that Monsieur Billy Bonkers, a fellow chocolatier has just been murdered in a hotel (gasp). 8 of us are in the same hotel (Hotel Paradiso) for different reasons and now *shock, horror* one of us is the murderer. JX even had Parisien music floating in the background, well done for creating the mood!
On this light note, we took a group shot before adjourning to the dining room where dinner table was set for us. Seriously pro, these hosts.

Each of us had our own script booklet where it cues you when to read out your script. It also prompts you to question some of the suspicious characters and you may improvise a little. Clearly we were too eager and so it was very outright questioning of "Did you kill Billy Bonkers??"
Other characters we had for the night were:
Rachel as Dr Doris Johnson, an Aztec art lover
Rongxuan as Lady Barbara
Jixian as Dr Sigmund Fraud
CY as a ventriloquist Little Fizz with his little puppet Ziggy
Christine as another chocolatierKen as a boxer (had to turn up with a black eye for his character)
There were even exhibits A, B and C being passed around to explain certain things and in between courses, we had to go back to watch more short clips from the DVD. It was a little cumbersome, but oh well, we had an important task at hand - no time to be lazy!
Dinner was very enjoyable, again with JX's amazing cooking skills. It was definitely a treat.
Spot the boxer with his black eye |
Busy reading our scripts |
Dr Doris Johnson even rented a costume, super effort! She won best dressed for the night. |
It was quite amusing because at times we would break out of characters and chat about our week, or at random. And then quickly getting back into character again "Say did you kill Billy Bonkers??"
Dinner was soon finished and finally the last video revealed who the murderer was! Ahh gasp/ shock horror. It was the boxer!
*Applause* Well done everyone, especially our hosts for the evening.
Game over, time to relax |

Overall a very interesting night, full of mystery and anticipation. The dress up bit definitely made it more interesting, glad we were part of it!
