Birthday Saturday

Today has been a full-on Saturday. Weather wasn't great but this is London after all.

Rise and shine, brunch time at Le Pain Quotidien, South Bank. I had saved this date with Gabby, Sarah and Marketa some time back as my "birthday saturday", and it was only late last night that I decided what I wanted to do. Truth be told, I was very tired having just come back from my trip plus with quarter end closing, all I wanted was an easy day. Nothing too fanciful so what can be more apt to start with than a slow Saturday brunch along the Thames?

Le Pain Quotidien is the same cafe which Lucy brought me along Marylebone High Street a few months ago, and is also the same cafe which I brought my aunts to in Bruges. Lots of people have been raving to me about the brunch here, and today my curiosity has been satisfied. This cafe is everything organic, and with the big wooden tables, this place has a rustic homely feel.

Marketa

I ordered their granola yogurt parfait with a freshly squeezed orange juice, and together, 3 of us shared a bread basket. The variety of spread here is amazing- white chocolate "Blondie", praline (praline! I super like), dark chocolate, and the usual jam assortment.

There was a table full of girls dressed up as sailors, but what's with the garlands of garlic on their necks?

Marketa was the photographer of the day, and all I can say is she did an amazing job, with her many creative ideas. We all felt like supermodels that afternoon ;)

Chanced upon a market at South Bank

We met Sarah for our 'part 2' - Eat Pray Love movie. Yes I finally got to watch it. It was a pity Jos couldn't join. The movie was great, but like any other book which has been made into a movie, the book is usually still better. I mean, how can you squeeze the whole book into a 2.5h movie and expect it to be better than the book? That said, I'd still say that it's well done, sticking close to the book plot. Julia Roberts did great as Liz Gilbert. Sarah who was skeptical about the film came out with teary eyes exclaiming "it's actually good!"

My present.. wool mittens to get ready for winter :(

We had some time so we went to a pub and they ordered a bottle of wine to share to "celebrate my birthday". Sheesh, it was strong and without food, we all got really light headed wooooh... very happy *wheeee*

Lest you think my day was over, it was time to travel back to Canada Water (best neighbourhood to me) for dinner at C's place with my CW bunch whom I miss a lot. C is from Brunei and apparently he had a strong craving for laksa recently and knowing it takes lots of work, he thought he might as well cook one big pot and invite more people to share his love for this dish. And I was honored to sample his grandma's recipe tonight. In fact, all the ang mohs loved it and slurped their bowls dry (which surprised me actually coz it's quite an authentic dish).. so what to say? We all think C did a great job. He was practically cooking the whole day, bless him.

All ingredients laid out on the table and we took what we wanted for our laksa. Apparently this is Sarawak laksa, slightly different from the Singapore version but very delicious nonetheless.

Authentic!

The rain continued and became heavier as we were slurping down bowls of laksa and before we knew it, it was 1030pm. Time to start the trek home. Err did I say I wanted an easy day?

Murder Mystery Dinner Party

Two Saturdays ago we were invited to the Kim's for a themed dinner, specifically a Murder Mystery dinner party.  What is that, you might ask.  It was our first time attending such a dinner too, and so how it works is: a group of people attend a dinner party.  Each is assigned a role and will be given a script to read that night.  The aim of the party is to identify a murderer in the midst of us by the end of the night.  The hosts would work off a dinner game set (they got it off Amazon) and it comes with proper invites, setting/ scene, table name cards, scripts and even a suggested menu.  Clearly RX is an Agatha Christie fan. Two weeks beforehand, we received our invites in the postbox, telling us what roles we each have been assigned and the suggested attire (and props if necessary).  Interesting yes? The dinner was to start at 7pm and we were to have 8 people that night.  It's all very mysterious… Our invitation cards assigned K the...

Cooking mee pok dry | bak chor and fishball noodles

When I touched down at Changi airport a few weeks ago, I was very hungry and K suggested grabbing a quick bite at the food court.  I immediately went for the queue at the bak chor (minced pork) noodles stall.  This one dish is very local and we simply can't find it here.  London's Chinatown has a few Malaysian restaurants with fried kway teow, chicken rice, laksa, etc but there is no authentic fishball noodles or minced pork noodles. When my friend Corinne shared this link last week, I was intrigued and I didn't know K was too.  He suggested going to the Asian supermarket on Sunday to get the necessary ingredients.  We found Dodo fishballs from Singapore here - what a win!  Unfortunately the mee pok (yellow, flat noodles) is of a darker shade here and tastes slightly different (maybe a different type of wheat?).  We found fishcakes too. http://delishar.com/2015/12/fishball-noodles-mee-pok-tah.html This is a healthier version of the hawker center'...

Our Seoul Adventure (Part 1)

Gosh life has been non-stop since coming back from Seoul.  Work has been very busy, and then Izzy had stomach flu and I was a bit under the weather too.  With this, one month just zoomed passed. Been meaning to continue our Seoul adventure. Day One To be honest we had a rocky start on the first day.  Our 2am flight was delayed till 3am and we were super groggy when we got on the plane.  Kids were sleeping and we had to wake them up.  The stewardess served us food at 4am and we had no appetite whatsoever.  Made worse by the turbulence which scared us so much.  I think in total we each slept about 4h that night.  So thankful that our kids love traveling and did not whine, but i did feel like i floated out of that plane into Incheon airport.  My original plan for Day One was to explore the palace area, have the famous ginseng chicken soup, and then visit the Bukchon hanok village.  Followed by a nice Korean BBQ for dinner.  The mo...
