I have never really heard about making gingerbread houses for Christmas until Rebecca mentioned it a few weeks ago. She suggested spending one Saturday morning baking and making it. Sounded really interesting to me so why not? :)
I took many photos along the way in the process wanting to show you guys how the house was eventually constructed. By Saturday afternoon the whole house smelt of gingerbread cookies - a bit overpowering in my opinion - oops. But really interesting nonetheless!
Halfway thru', I looked out of our bay window and saw the old couple who lives beside us putting up a Christmas tree in their front yard. They smiled at me and said they wanted to spread the Christmas cheer and make everyone happy. So sweet. In fact a lot of our neighbors in our street have already decorated their front yards for the festive season. All looking so pretty and Christmasy. Ahh really love this quaint little street we live in.
Besides making the house, Rebecca said we had to make some gingerbread people to go along so she set aside some extra dough for them. We had to go out in the afternoon and hence agreed to construct the hosue the next evening after church. She made some really sticky icing sugar (that's how you make them stick and hold on tight). It works really well because it's meant to give that snow effect. And besides that, she decorated the cookies too. I helped out and together we did that while watching our favourite TV show at the moment - the X Factor.
Tada! See the final product below! A very colourful gingerbread house decorated with loads of M&Ms, little gems and jellies. All down to details I tell you- the Christmas tree in front of our house is the one which I mentioned belongs to our neighbour. Our house number 33 is also on it. The windows and doors are exactly where they are in real life. Rebecca says it all has to be true to our actual house. It was a rainy cold Sunday night when we were doing it and Marcia suggested me taking a picture of it. Which turned out really nice, as if it were snowing outside.
It's now sitting proudly above our fireplace.
On another note, us girls decided we should get a real Christmas tree and decorate it so yesterday afternoon, K very kindly drove to our nearest B&Q to get our Christmas tree. It was really cool coz there are so many different types of trees you could choose from.

Baking out the pieces needed for the house using Rebecca's recipe

Some gingerbread people and star shaped butter shortbread to go along

Almost there. Constructing the house and decorating it.

These real Christmas trees were selling like hot cakes. After debating we decided on a medium cut Serbian Spruce. (Which was really heavy btw!)
