We found out last Friday night that the Singapore Embassy was doing their annual event to celebrate Singapore's National Day and even though we were not on the mailing list, Chris sent me the email the day before, so I contacted them and expressed our interest to attend. They were really nice and said both K and I could go as long as they have our names.
Never been to the embassy before, we found ourselves in the posh neighbourhood of Belgravia and outside we saw the Singapore flag flying high. The building is really nice, and when we stepped in, wow it posh.. it was full of Singaporeans and the smell of food.. the smell of home.. mmm...
The ambassador gave a speech and right after that we had to sing Majulah Singapura, followed by reciting the pledge. Oh gosh, when was the last time I sang the national anthem and recited the pledge? And then before we all could tuck into the delicious local fare, there was a cake cutting ceremony. The wife of the director of the SUKA association had baked the cake for the event, not an easy feat I'd say.
Surprisingly the crowd was much older than what I had expected. You could see that most of the people have made UK their home, with kids running around. Most people dressed up for the event as you can see below.

And I was the happiest when I saw the nyona kueh! The green and white kueh you see below which I cannot recall the name but was so happy I wolfed down two pieces, half wishing my stomach was bigger so I could have another one.
So glad I came! |
The event started promptly at 630pm so by 830pm, we were done. Too tired to stay to mingle more, we decided to leave and on the way back, we stopped by the top floor of Harvey Nichols for a drink.
And that was our Friday night. :)
