Cornwall in the Storm

This Cornwall trip was eventful.  We planned to set off Friday night after work and stay overnight in North Devon but because both K and I couldn't leave work early, we decided not to set off at 8pm and arrive Devon at 3am.  Plus my friend Z is unfamiliar with the roads here and to start his UK driving experience driving in the dark didn't seem right.

We set off at 730am on Saturday but guess what, our growling stomachs brought us to St. Katherine's Docks for breakfast, a long one to be precise.  The two guys who have never met before soon hit it off and couldn't stop chatting!  I attribute it to the fact both were born in the same year hence the affinity.

After 4h of non stop driving, we decided to stop somewhere for lunch.  I looked at the map and decided on Bridgewater, a little town along the motorway.  We had a pub lunch and before long, I had to hurry the boys "let's go guys, stop chatting!"  haa ok to be fair I was also chatting too until I looked at the watch.

It was already 3pm and we were not even close to Cornwall!  K suggested going to Tintagel Castle along the way and I was glad we did.  Because at least we saw some nice views of the coast before the big storm came.

Tintagel Castle is a castle in ruins along the coast and we stopped for about an hour, to walk to the castle before running into the Cornishman Inn for a cup of hot tea.  Boy was it cold and windy here in Cornwall.

Where is our tea?
When we finally reached Penzance, the extreme western part of the UK, it was 8.30pm.  Super gasp- I was dreading the long drive back in 4 days' time.  My bum was hurting and we were all hungry.  The B&B owner was getting impatient waiting for us... he kindly recommended us a few places to have dinner and so we rushed off.  But before we could do, he brought some bad news.  He said the storm was coming and will be raining and affecting the whole of South England.  He envisioned us staying in the whole of the next day and suggested us borrowing some board games or DVDs from him.  And added "It's gonna be quite rough.." Omg what bad news :(  We didn't drive the whole day to play board games at his B&B... I mean I know we all 3 get along real well but...

Rise and shine, next day indeed the rain came and we decided to be brave.  K, who has been to Cornwall twice, assumed the role of the tour guide and suggested visiting the Minack Theatre and Land's End.  And we will assess the weather by then.. when we reached Minack Theatre, the waves were crashing, the winds were blowing at such high speeds, the rain was beating in our faces.  It was impossible to open our umbrellas.  I felt I was almost being blown into the Atlantic Ocean!  The picture doesn't do much justice on the weather but trust me, it was an angry ocean.

So cute!

And off to Land's End.. really the tip of the land that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.. once again, the winds made it even difficult to walk properly.  Z was brave to venture down nearer to the coastline to "have a look" whereas K and I decided to wait for him in the cafe.  Some hot chocolate was very much needed by then!  Z kept joking saying he wanted some hot chrysanthemum tea and kept telling us if he doesn't come back in 30min... "Remember we leave no man behind". lol

In the cafe... haha look at how drenched (and cold) we were!

Finally we decided we couldn't win the weather and so back to the B&B we went.  Time to whip out all the techie gadgets to pass time.  The rain got heavier and so we decided to order in Domino's pizza for dinner that night.  Fingers crossed for a better tomorrow.

Murder Mystery Dinner Party

Two Saturdays ago we were invited to the Kim's for a themed dinner, specifically a Murder Mystery dinner party.  What is that, you might ask.  It was our first time attending such a dinner too, and so how it works is: a group of people attend a dinner party.  Each is assigned a role and will be given a script to read that night.  The aim of the party is to identify a murderer in the midst of us by the end of the night.  The hosts would work off a dinner game set (they got it off Amazon) and it comes with proper invites, setting/ scene, table name cards, scripts and even a suggested menu.  Clearly RX is an Agatha Christie fan. Two weeks beforehand, we received our invites in the postbox, telling us what roles we each have been assigned and the suggested attire (and props if necessary).  Interesting yes? The dinner was to start at 7pm and we were to have 8 people that night.  It's all very mysterious… Our invitation cards assigned K the...

Cooking mee pok dry | bak chor and fishball noodles

When I touched down at Changi airport a few weeks ago, I was very hungry and K suggested grabbing a quick bite at the food court.  I immediately went for the queue at the bak chor (minced pork) noodles stall.  This one dish is very local and we simply can't find it here.  London's Chinatown has a few Malaysian restaurants with fried kway teow, chicken rice, laksa, etc but there is no authentic fishball noodles or minced pork noodles. When my friend Corinne shared this link last week, I was intrigued and I didn't know K was too.  He suggested going to the Asian supermarket on Sunday to get the necessary ingredients.  We found Dodo fishballs from Singapore here - what a win!  Unfortunately the mee pok (yellow, flat noodles) is of a darker shade here and tastes slightly different (maybe a different type of wheat?).  We found fishcakes too. http://delishar.com/2015/12/fishball-noodles-mee-pok-tah.html This is a healthier version of the hawker center'...

Our Seoul Adventure (Part 1)

Gosh life has been non-stop since coming back from Seoul.  Work has been very busy, and then Izzy had stomach flu and I was a bit under the weather too.  With this, one month just zoomed passed. Been meaning to continue our Seoul adventure. Day One To be honest we had a rocky start on the first day.  Our 2am flight was delayed till 3am and we were super groggy when we got on the plane.  Kids were sleeping and we had to wake them up.  The stewardess served us food at 4am and we had no appetite whatsoever.  Made worse by the turbulence which scared us so much.  I think in total we each slept about 4h that night.  So thankful that our kids love traveling and did not whine, but i did feel like i floated out of that plane into Incheon airport.  My original plan for Day One was to explore the palace area, have the famous ginseng chicken soup, and then visit the Bukchon hanok village.  Followed by a nice Korean BBQ for dinner.  The mo...
