I'm not sure if it is just friends around me or is it the fad but of late there has been this craze in chasing down the best burger in London. So there are a few contenders so I heard: Shake Shack, Five Guys, Patty & Bun… I suspect we are one of the last ones to try Shake Shack and one of the few who have not tried Five Guys and Patty & Bun. Too slow onto the bandwagon!
Shake Shack. This is an American burger place which opened their first branch at Covent Garden in July this year and I hear there is always a queue. Well we we decided to find out for ourselves on Friday night after work. What a welcome from Covent Garden too, we saw that it was all decked and ready for Christmas! We were greeted with such a beautiful scene.
Isn't it beautiful? |
We met at Shake Shack and perhaps because it was 830pm (late?) there wasn't much of a queue. There were people lingering out and about, and a constant stream of diners, but nothing considered as crowded.
We ordered their Shack Burger, their cheese fries and a root beer float each. Lured by the big red balls hanging above us, we naturally walked towards the outdoor eating section and decided to eat outside without thinking too much. Which was a bad choice because it.was.cold. The burgers were hot and steamy, so were the cheese fries. We were hungry and cold, that we wolfed them down pretty quickly. At one point K stood up abruptly and said "We HAVE to move, it is too cold!" But of course the indoor seating area - which wasn't quite big - was full. I finished my burger in a haste and we hurriedly went to find an indoor place to thaw. Which at this time, it would naturally be... an English pub.
Yummy Shack Burgers and cheese fries - the beef patties were succulent and juicy. |
Can't believe we still ordered a root beer float each. Not surprising that the ice cream did not melt much considering the temperature. |

To be honest, this wine bar was a surprise find. It wasn't rowdy or anything. People were in small groups chatting about over a glass of wine, most likely relieved that the working week was over. We found a cosy alcove within the pub with old English leather sofas and ordered a glass of red wine each. We dreaded walking out in the cold and at one stage contemplated if we should book a cab home. Of course nothing like that happened because we were quoted GBP24 and we decided to take the tube home quite naturally.
