I've often lamented that we cannot find any good fish ball noodles here in London. If I master that, I think I can make some good money here selling fish ball noodles.
Yesterday we spent the afternoon with K's group of friends who are from Singapore. In a way, this is the group of friends that keeps us grounded and connects us to home: the Singlish words that form part of every sentence spoken (wah-lao… how can like that??), sharing of happening news back home (I think we first heard of the riots back home from the whatsapp chat group, or the recent "Private property prices are falling!"). They are the friends that jio-ed us to sign up for Singapore Day (29th March 2014, here in London baby!). Basically the sort of friends that practice comradeship and look out for fellow Singaporeans which I think is very sweet.
Or on the other hand, you can call them the cliquish bunch. Cliquish because everyone is in the same season of life and currently K and I stand out amongst them. They are also what I call the "family oriented group" because every couple either already has a baby/ toddler or one on the way. Calista looked very pregnant and will be giving birth around 7th February. I don't know why but when I saw her, I just felt very nervous for her. 7th February is coming very soon! Yi Ling and Ken have baby Edward, whilst Cecilia and TC have baby Noah.
We met for lunch at this very unsuspecting looking Japanese restaurant in Greenwich called Zaibatsu. It's a tiny place but apparently rated one of the best restaurants in London. All credit to TW who searched and found this place. The sushi was surprisingly good and I was very impressed by their presentation. We then adjourned to Starbucks not too far away and continued chatting over coffee. It was such a slow and lazy afternoon. We ended the afternoon by going to this huge Asian supermarket called See Woo, where Yiling said they needed to buy a sack of rice to fill up their rice vat - something you need to do for Chinese New Year - a sign that you will have a constant supply of provision in the new year. I think I looked surprised when she said that cos the last time I heard someone saying that was years ago by my grandma! Yiling said we should do that too, but I realise we can't - because we have no rice vat! lol Rice rules aside, while we were there, I was at the fridge section and I saw packets of kway teow (flat white rice noodles), and yellow egg noodles. Right beside them were packets of fish balls. Instinctively I had an idea - try making my own fish ball noodles! I grabbed a packet of Chinese vegetables too, and felt quite excited about cooking tomorrow's lunch already!
I called home on Sunday morning and chatted with my grandma. I asked her how to cook fish ball noodles and due to the lack of meat ingredients at home, I decided to make a simple variation of this dish with the ingredients I bought and using a chicken soup stock. Top with some fried shallots and verdict? Really not bad at all! :)

Definitely will try that again!
