I haven't thought much about getting a pair of wellington boots until recently. To me having a pair of wellies signify festivals, rain, mud, hikes, walks in the forest… because it rains so often here, it's quintissentially British... you get the drift. It probably means more than that because recently it seems to be a fad, or at least I have been made aware. So much so that Hunter had their flagship store opened on Regent Street late last year.
Hunter Boots is probably the mother of all wellies and goes back a long way.
"The story of the Wellington boot begins in England in the early 19th century. The Duke of Wellington commissioned famed London shoemaker Hoby of St James to modify his military Hessian boots. These first boots, the Duke's namesake style, were made of leather, cut close to the calf and were designed as a fashion item.Later with technological advances, the boots were made from rubber, employing the innovative technique of vulcanisation, patented in 1844. The rubber material ensured that the boots were completely waterproof. Because of their protective qualities, the boots were worn by explorers, farmers and soldiers in the field.Using many of the same techniques, today our boots are handcrafted from 28 parts and carefully hand assembled on the Original last from 1956. With craftsmanship central to Hunter, this dedication ensures the boots offer exceptional fit and comfort."

I arranged with Gabby to go down to the store on Tuesday night to try them on to see if I like them. I was contemplating the olive green or the red. There were so many models I had trouble knowing which ones to get. You have the original tall Wellington or the lighter foldable version called the Tour. Personally I prefer the Tour cos it's lighter and I felt less like Phua Chu Kang lol
Finally with Gabby's suggestion, I decided to go with the olive green because in her words "Kate Middleton has this same pair". No further persuasion needed.
Ordering online from Hunter is probably one of the best online shopping experience I've had in a long time. I had emails confirming my purchase and updating me of my boots whereabouts. Knowing there wouldn't be anyone to sign for it at home, I had requested for it to be left outside our front porch. When it was delivered, the delivery company even took two pictures of where he left it and emailed me so I am aware it's in a safe place.
Well what does the hubby think? Because they are rubber boots, he reckons I look like (a) construction worker, or (b) a fishmonger.
What can I say? Whatever…. *rolls eyes*
I love my Hunter Boots! |
Thanks to the wonderful world of fashion and social media, I realise there is the concept of boot socks to keep my feet warm in my wellies in winter! Ahem I just did a little additional investment - will show you when it arrives!
