This coming Tuesday will be Singapore's 51st birthday and today we hosted a SG National Day Potluck Lunch at our place! It's always nice to have friends come over and especially nice if the sun shines and we can hang out in our garden.
We sent the invite out about 3 weeks before and asked what people would be bringing, the only criteria that it being a Singaporean/ Malaysian dish. Soon we had a list of yummy food and cheesy as it may sound, I asked everyone to come dressed in red and white!

"So patriotic" you might say. I guess absence does make the heart grow fonder. I mean, translating this to Singapore, if we were to host a similar party, asking someone to bring local food sounds a bit strange to me, no? We probably would be eating local food everyday anyway. I was texting a friend back home two days ago telling her about this potluck lunch and she said she tried to do the same back home for her colleagues and friends but the response rate was so low she had to cancel it. Reason? Most were trying to get out of the country for a short break. Hmm I have to admit that I'm not sure if I would also be this excited to host a National Day party if I were back home.
Your hosts for the day |
Being away from home too long also means we take cheesy shots like this lol |
Thank God for awesome friends who cook so well. Seriously, I didn't expect such levels of expertise amongst us people.
For mains, we had:
Chicken curry (by K) with shop bought pratas (yes can't believe we can find pratas here)
Mee goreng by yours truly
Fried carrot cake (in both black and white options - gasp)
Homemade fish cakes
Drunken prawns
Chicken rice
Chicken wings
Spring rolls
For desserts, we had
Soya beancurd
Homemade Pulut hitam (which was so good)
Homemade lemon drizzle cake

Pulut hitam with coconut milk and soya beancurd |
We ate and JX even sourced Youtube for some nostalgic National Day songs which can sound quite cheesy but you know what, we like! Songs like Stand Up for Singapore and We are Singapore played our airwaves that afternoon. Just short of reciting our national pledge lol.
We also had two Malaysian friends amongst us - we joke that we embrace our neighbours too ;) |
Coincidentally these 5 guys were from the same secondary school and so we made them take a group shot with our flag |
M is a friend of a friend, and is here alone on a 5 week course and I invited her along |
Chilling out after dessert |
At around 6pm - these days lunch parties stretch till dinner time, not that we mind :) - someone said she had to leave to go to a dinner appointment. Honestly we could eat no more I have no idea how she can deal with a dinner appointment lol Most people took that as a cue and started to help us clear the table before leaving. It was tiring but oh so fun and memorable. I think I'm gonna remember this for a long time.
Knowing me, I can't have no bunting for a garden party :) |
