Birthday weekend

Two weekends ago was my birthday weekend; well because birthday was on a Friday, it kinda stretched into the weekend.  I didn't plan too much but it turned out to be a great birthday.

On Friday, the actual day, I had an unplanned birthday lunch in a new hipster joint, a vegan cafe by the foot of Tower Bridge with CY, SP and of course Isabelle.  It was a warm and beautiful sunny day, I couldn't have asked for a better weather on a birthday.

That same evening, our friend SP kindly agreed to be our manny and help put Isabelle to bed so that K and I both could enjoy a night out at the O2.  K got tickets for us for Michael McIntyre, our favourite stand up comedian.  I was really excited for this one and couldn't wait, although I have to say that there were so many obstacles in getting to that show that evening.

We couldn't get a table at the restaurant we planned to.  The entire O2 was packed out and it was just throngs of people everywhere.  I had to plead with the waitress to give us a table "because it was my birthday.  Cheeky I know but we were desperate.  She tried her best to let me jump the queue but it was still not quick enough as our show was at 8pm and at 7.30pm we were still hanging around the bar area, waiting for the buzzer in our hand to sound.  I told K to forget about dinner as the show was going to start soon and we left disappointedly.  Deep down though, I felt a weird sense of peace and I know everything would be ok.  Which it was.  We were planning to join the queue to get into the arena when we saw this Brazilian restaurant and we casually asked for a table and they immediately ushered us in.  Oh wow, we should have tried this place first!  They knew we were rushing for the show and told us food would arrive very soon.  That was 7.45pm and we noticed the queue wasn't moving much due to the strict security checks.  Finally we ate our food hurriedly and joined the queue; I believed we were the last few into the arena.  Guess what, the security personnel saw my e-tickets on my phone and said they can't admit us.  We needed paper tickets.  And we had to walk all the way out to the ticketing booth to get them printed!  Geez, to think that were almost there!  By the time we went in, it was 830pm and MM himself just came onstage after the warm up act.  Talk about good timing!

When we reached home, lil Isabelle was up and crying.
And so we welcomed her to join us in the cutting of my birthday cake at 11pm

Yeahhh one year older!  First birthday as a mom.

On Saturday, I had planned a girly afternoon with some friends for an afternoon tea.  It was really nice to be able to meet up with friends and forget about my mom life momentarily.  Me-time is always good and refreshes the soul :)

Our waitress surprised me with a little birthday brownie

I have to admit that by now I had thought my birthday celebration/ treats were over.  Didn't quite expect to have a bit more me-time on Sunday when hubby decided to bring Isabelle with him when he went for brunch with his friends.

3 men and a baby!

Little Izzy getting comfy in daddy's embrace

Lurking outside Kensington Palace.  Who knows?  Might meet Prince George or Louis! lol

And that is the conclusion of my birthday weekend.

On another note, autumn is truly here and like previous years, I can't stop marvelling at the wall of red leaves in our garden.

I'm ready for my first autumn!

Jubilee Weekend | Afternoon Tea Party

http://www.thediamondjubilee.org/ Today is the end of the Jubilee celebrations and how better to end it off than to have an afternoon tea party in the company of friends, while watching the celebrations on our TV.  It has been quite an emotional afternoon, in the good sense of course.  I don't think I've ever seen Queen Elizabeth on TV (and heard the national anthem God Save the Queen) more than these 3 days combined, but this Jubilee weekend has made me grew to love and admire this lady.  She is 86 and reminds me so much of my own granny, and her strength is amazing.  Imagine being sworn in as queen at the age of 26.  (I mean, what was I doing when I was 26?)  On Sunday when she and Prince Philip went onboard the Spirit of Chartwell boat to watch the River Pageant, it was cold and windy but they stood throughout the 3 hours event.  It was said she was offered some hot tea and a seat, which she both said no to.  I love my grandma but ...

Murder Mystery Dinner Party

Two Saturdays ago we were invited to the Kim's for a themed dinner, specifically a Murder Mystery dinner party.  What is that, you might ask.  It was our first time attending such a dinner too, and so how it works is: a group of people attend a dinner party.  Each is assigned a role and will be given a script to read that night.  The aim of the party is to identify a murderer in the midst of us by the end of the night.  The hosts would work off a dinner game set (they got it off Amazon) and it comes with proper invites, setting/ scene, table name cards, scripts and even a suggested menu.  Clearly RX is an Agatha Christie fan. Two weeks beforehand, we received our invites in the postbox, telling us what roles we each have been assigned and the suggested attire (and props if necessary).  Interesting yes? The dinner was to start at 7pm and we were to have 8 people that night.  It's all very mysterious… Our invitation cards assigned K the...

Cooking mee pok dry | bak chor and fishball noodles

When I touched down at Changi airport a few weeks ago, I was very hungry and K suggested grabbing a quick bite at the food court.  I immediately went for the queue at the bak chor (minced pork) noodles stall.  This one dish is very local and we simply can't find it here.  London's Chinatown has a few Malaysian restaurants with fried kway teow, chicken rice, laksa, etc but there is no authentic fishball noodles or minced pork noodles. When my friend Corinne shared this link last week, I was intrigued and I didn't know K was too.  He suggested going to the Asian supermarket on Sunday to get the necessary ingredients.  We found Dodo fishballs from Singapore here - what a win!  Unfortunately the mee pok (yellow, flat noodles) is of a darker shade here and tastes slightly different (maybe a different type of wheat?).  We found fishcakes too. http://delishar.com/2015/12/fishball-noodles-mee-pok-tah.html This is a healthier version of the hawker center'...
