Keep Warm.
Yes, this is my winter mantra this year. It's that cold time of the year again and as I think back on how sick I was last winter I shudder at the thought, especially now that I am staying on my own. Hence, I need to keep on.. keeping WARM.
I've been having tips from friends and colleagues and man, when I think back of last winter (which was super cold btw), I feel sad for both Cynthia and me! We were seriously pathetic!! For some reason, we just ENDURED. Our rooms underfloor heating didn't work. We accepted it and endured. Every night, we jumped into icy cold beds and I would lie there in and not move for like 10 whole minutes before my body slowly warmed up, not the whole bed but ONLY the surface area which I was lying on can you imagine. My bolster was icy cold and I didn't use it much. Towards the end of winter, some friends knew about our heating problem and advised us to get portable heaters but oh well, we were more than halfway thru so Cynthia thought there wasn't much point to get. And so we continued enduring. I guess for me surviving in winter is so foreign and when it's cold, I just accept it because "it is winter, what do you expect". It's funny how I didn't for one moment try to think of how I can keep myself warmer at home!
But nono, this year.. I cannot. I cannot afford to want to save money and just live in the cold like that. I cannot afford to catch a chill and fall sick. I need to find ways to keep warm. This new house I am in is cold, or even colder. Now I wonder what is up with Bel and cold houses?!
Anyway thanks to Bev who introduced me the electric blanket. She and her bf used it when they were working in Tokyo. It's like this very normal looking mattress protector looking thingy but has thin wires running inside and there is a remote attached to it at one corner to adjust the heat settings. I asked around more and was super convinced so last night I trooped down to Argos and got myself one which was on half price offer! I was so excited and even texted Kathryn telling her how I think I was gonna sleep like a baby. Oh man, for once, my bed felt welcoming! I finally could enjoy a nice warm bed *in bliss* and I was like "oh man, thank you Jesus thank youuuu!!" haha (try to imagine my happiness!) Bev told me once you are snug and warm under the duvet, you could switch it off and so I did. But in the middle of the night I felt cold and so I had to switch it on again. It was a bit scary coz it's like you are sleeping on wires (you don't feel it but your mind keeps reminding you trust me) and then that brought me to the conversation with Quek and Alicia.
They recommended me to get a real winter duvet from here and they were seriously appalled when I told them my duvet is from John Little back home. HAHA they were wide eyed and went "cannot lah!! This is winter leh! That is Singapore standard duvet!" Right, how come that didn't cross my mind before? They taught me that duvets go by tog here and the higher the tog, the warmer it is. They have one for summer and one for winter at home (AND added "whoa we can perspire when we sleep, even now!" Thanks leh Quek, makes me feel so good about my icy cold bed at home.) But mmm this idea sounds good. How can I not ever bring up the topic of duvet even once after knowing them here for more than 1.5yrs??! So today in office I did some online browsing again and saw this down feather 10.5 tog duvet again at Argos. It's not very expensive, only GBP22 and there were 66 reviewers who gave it a full 5 stars (sounds amazing rite!). Kathryn kept telling me "Go for hungarian goose feather! They are lush!!" Followed by "Oh they cost 500 quid btw." Err thanks but no thanks. Argos is my answer so again, I went down second night in a row to get my duvet. boy was it heavy! All the duck feather inside! Looks and feels promising.
I figure out I'm gonna use the electric blanket, and when it's snug and warm, I'll switch it off and let the 10.5tog duvet take over!!
I think I am gonna sleep like a baby tonight! Wish me luck!! =)
